“I’ve always liked the primitive look and the lightweight characteristics of the batik sarong, but they seem difficult to throw on with the folding and tying,” says Rio Bravo owner Steve Snyder, who created the simple, form-fitting swimsuit sarong.
Primitive Beach Style
Batik material is created in Indonesia by pressing wax patterns onto rayon fabric, which is then died and the wax removed. With accents of fringe or beads, Snyder makes the sarongs by hand.

“The handmade feel of them connects me to primitive times,” Snyder said. “They have been worn for centuries in Japan, China, Indonesia, Africa and other parts of the world. The swimsuit sarong has history, art and function.”
